Hi.
In the top tech tidbits news letter today I read about updating the wireless to make it perform better.
I have just tried this and found that its not as easy as that.
As you know I use softwarepatch.com to update my drivers just to see ofcause.
1. download drivers.
for intel wifi.
install drivers.
So far so good.
2. restart, and turn on wireless.
So far so good.
3. run intel proset wireless.
And get an error telling me to upgrade.
This is the tricky part even if you know the device you want there are loads on loads of options to choose from, its hard to even know where to start.
So if your wireless is working don’t bother.
I actually did a roleback to the previous drivers and everything works again.
Oh proset still worked just the error came up on startup of it.
Still its not a total loss as its repaired some config issues I had in proset wireless.
Just to be aware if you use a laptop, etc that you may have to update other things to.
My advice is to leave it alone, unless you really want trouble.
Ok, ok, a mild anoyance of trying to figure out what the heck is what on a webpage.
Ofcause if toshiba keept stuff updated more often than not I’d use their updated software however this laptop has not had any updated devices since last year, the sound update failed for unknown reason and sound clipped and the system went unstable till I reinstalled old drivers.
Judging from performance I was still getting the same connection speeds when near the router.
that is about 54mbps, ofcause I am right beside the router with one wall seperating the unit from the main room.
so the thing is like real close to me.
In my dining room I get a good signal proset says.
Thats probably the only place i plan to go although for the heck of it I’d like to try it some times down stairs, altough this is probably going to be the lowest place I will go, pratcially its the dining room and maybe the deck so as long as I can get average signals you should be fine.
Another thing the artical does not note is if unsure with things for routers say on the website check with tech support.
Most likely you should be ok.

This is a long read, found this on twitter, thanks to Brandon B from Canada. This backs up what I’ve been saying for a long time along with some others. Bring on the facts, man.
bits for this week
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009Hi.
spybot sd and spywareblaster have updates.
office 2007 sp2 and the compatibility pack sp2 are out.
the important feature of office 2007 sp2 is ability to read save and open /write odf style open office documents as well as pdfs.
Or at least pdf export.
Also for 2007 are releases of all help programs for that pack about 9 files.
ie8 on windows update.
ie8 is out for windows update.
so anyone with issues these are probably fixed now, a reminder for all of us that don’t want this to remove this from the update page.
Oh and if you don’t get all the updates for optional stuff selected, this means you currently can’t have them yet, just install the critical ones and then go back.
I had to select one update and guess afterwards as boxes in hal 5.21 were not read till I clicked optional again you need to reclick the optional icon for some weird reason and then tab through the list selecting boxes.
once it all loads though that should rock.
Other features of office 07sp2 is supposed to better prevention of security hacks and sertain crash schnarios as well as faster shutdown and startup and finally aparently outlook corruption to some extent seems to be addressed with file sizes limits for the outlook files.
And a few other sinc things I feelt were overdue.
Ofcause that was not the reason I went out of my way to read the info.
partly was to get the pack for backup when my hdd case is replaced.
The other was to check if the genuine advantage update was included in the pack.
which it was not.
If you have a slower system you should definately like this.

GW Micro and accessaphone™Make Office Phones Accessible to Blind and Visually Impaired
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009GW Micro and accessaphone™Make Office Phones Accessible to Blind and Visually Impaired
For people who are blind or have vision impairments , accessing a phone in a typical office can be a difficult challenge. Caller ID and other important pieces of information are presented visually on the LCD display of most phones. While the numbers and other buttons on a phone are easy for a blind or visually impaired person to push because they are tactile, the information on the LCD display has been impossible to access . . . until now.
GW Micro and Tenacity have joined together to make office phones accessible to blind and visually impaired people through the use of GW Micro’s Window-Eyes and Tenacity’s accessaphone. accessaphone provides audible caller ID information from the telephone as well as audible message waiting, alternative input methods to conduct call control including intuitive keyboard hot keys (i.e. Alt A to Answer, Alt H to Hold and Alt C to Conference, etc.), a call log, the option to keep notes about the call, and much more.
“While accessaphone does include built-in text-to-speech, some users may select the option to silence accessaphone and enjoy the added benefits of using Window-Eyes.” said Dustin Armstrong, Director of Operations of Tenacity . “GW Micro has been a force in making various technologies accessible to blind consumers,” said Dan Weirich, GW Micro’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We are very excited to work with Tenacity to help continue to make the workplace even more accessible.”
For pricing and more information on accessaphone (www.accessaphone.com), contact sales@accessaphone.com. Blind and visually impaired consumers who want to use accessaphone will need the latest version of Window-Eyes (www.gwmicro.com). After installing Window-Eyes, a free Window-Eyes script must be downloaded from GW Micro’s Script Central that allows Window-Eyes to work with accessaphone located at www.gwmicro.com/Scripts/Accessaphone. For pricing and more information on Window-Eyes, please contact GW Micro at (260) 489-3671, or via email at sales@gwmicro.com.

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009java
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009Hi.
Just noticed this in the latest upgrade.
It appears that now java updates itself without you having to uninstall old versions it also doesn’t change its folder, meaning in short that reinstalling accessbridge is not needed anymore.
Never checked it was always used to reinstalling the bridge.
Still its good to know its not needed as its hard as it is to install with wait times.
finally
Tuesday, April 21st, 2009Hi all.
finally softwarepatch.com actually has the update list.
These include the march directx and java 6.13 update.
The following updates are needed for vista.
2 patches for server isolation.
search path and http services.
office text converters and wordpad and direct show.
I think that covers everything.
A note that I will be going on holoday for 3 days starting the 24th, this friday and going to the 26th, this sonday.
although there is probably going to be a backlog to monday and maybe tuesday.
In other tech related news, my external 500gb drive is still broken.
Yeah I know I really should update my rant journal but I just can’t be bothered and there is just not much to put in it.
The hdd works acording to the tech but its not powering at any powerpoint, it died 2 weeks ago.
but if it works and my trusted tech says it does then I don’t doubt him.
So now I know my drive is perfictly all ok what is causing the issue, what caused it, how do I get it back and how do I prevent the same issue from coming back up again.
Also on that field my talking book player was replaced yesterday after one of its motors stopped.
Hopefully next week I will be free of my other inguagements and can start asking about my tech job for auckland uni.
Its another boring research project in another boring as hell lab.
But it pays well about 25 bucks per 60-90 minutes.
So I could get 50 for working there per time.
This will actually rock previded though that the guy I am working with has everything set, should rock.
I wander if they fixed the bugs in the interface system I put up.
These mainly being that the feadback system was beeping the pc speaker and not sending a sound or voice to the sound card.
I know its minor but to those doing the tests its damn hard to actually hear a 1 second beep as supposed to a ding from the card chip.
Thats probably all I will have till june when the birthdays start coming.
and piano restarts.
Oh wait there is the hubble shuttle on 12 may and startrek movie on the 8th which I want to watch.
I want to watch it before the 13th maybe even on the 12 may my time.
Why?
Just because of said launch if it was to hit near the time of launch then well it would be semi weird.
later all.
if nothing comes up see you guys in 3 days.
