updates

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Hi all.
win7 and vista updates
2 kernal related
one for smb, one for the tls and ssl security layers.
activex kill bits.

directx direct show.
note!!! those that update this will have to get the latest directx redist from microsoft or reinstall directx as this update will break it and no games will work.
search for download directx, softwarepatch has not updated this.
On that unofficial note, flash is updated.
Right now though you will not be getting direct downloads from me because they are not on softwarepatch and I don’t search these out really.
However you may get an update box when you start your system.
you may have to wait for dialup connections but if you use broadband hit update and wait
a few seconds and it should work.
other updates for xp include the smb server and client.
windows shell
and paint as descussed on this blog.
server and client subsystem.
note, all updates for win7 and xp are vertually the same, kernal direct show ssl and tls and smb server and client.
win xp has 2 direct show updates server client subsystem and windows shell.

reminders

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Hi all.
Today I was sharply reminded how at risk we are.
And we don’t need to be hacked.
I won’t mention names here however a sertain person on one of my lists using googlemail, has unknowingly been hacked.
The only clue was someone using the same email address he has but on hotmail.
Since I don’t block spam I got this lucky break.
usually I kill the coman stuff but this one was advertising a 3g phone for the iphone.
The only reason I was suspicious at all was the subject line was blank.
Otherwise at least the header bar the email address was lagit.
I have sent him the spam message and told him to check his stuff.

This goes back to the thing last year saying you could be charged for something you did not do.
About 4 years back my dad suddenly got charged for having porn.
he was also billed for having porn.
And for a lot of cash.
Someone probably in a shop read his credit card number, though the police said there was no real point tracking it.
Whoever it was covered himself quite well.
He made an hotmail address with my dad’s name and address and phone number.
There was just one mistake.
my dad has and never will use hotmail.
Naturally the bank investigated and payed back the cash.
Its still a mystery on how the card was hacked and dad thinks it was someone reading it off at a shop.
And though this is an unlucky thing, and even though nothing happened.
It brings back home to me what could happen.
My dad could be charged with putting porn or something on his system or something.
Ofcause we are not as bad as some parts of the world.
Since then we have 2 cards, one has a limited ammount.
this is the card we use for all online shopping.
It gets stolen, no issue.
However when this happened my mum and dad had the same name on the card.
both had to get new cards.
It was annoying and maybe thats all the hacker wanted it to be, annoying.
the issue was sorted, but hmph.
that was ages ago.

Hi all.
was reading the iss blog today and found this item.
I also found a way to subscribe to the latest news so expect any updates I find interesting from there.
This will mean more articles from me rather than updates.
speaking of which firefox 3.6 is now official.
Note that at least some users of nvda on the nvda list have found firefox to have some inaccessible issues.
the following article comes from

http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2010/jan/HQ_M10-011_Hawaii221169.html

that link also has instructions on subscribing and unsubscribing to the news system.
the text version is at

NASA EXTENDS THE WORLD WIDE WEB OUT INTO SPACE

HOUSTON — Astronauts aboard the International Space Station received
a special software upgrade this week – personal access to the
Internet and the World Wide Web via the ultimate wireless connection.

Expedition 22 Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer made first use of the new
system Friday, when he posted the first unassisted update to his
Twitter account, @Astro_TJ, from the space station. Previous tweets
from space had to be e-mailed to the ground where support personnel
posted them to the astronaut’s Twitter account.

“Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International
Space Station — the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send
your ?s”

This personal Web access, called the Crew Support LAN, takes advantage
of existing communication links to and from the station and gives
astronauts the ability to browse and use the Web. The system will
provide astronauts with direct private communications to enhance
their quality of life during long-duration missions by helping to
ease the isolation associated with life in a closed environment.

During periods when the station is actively communicating with the
ground using high-speed Ku-band communications, the crew will have
remote access to the Internet via a ground computer. The crew will
view the desktop of the ground computer using an onboard laptop and
interact remotely with their keyboard touchpad.

Astronauts will be subject to the same computer use guidelines as
government employees on Earth. In addition to this new capability,
the crew will continue to have official e-mail, Internet Protocol
telephone and limited videoconferencing capabilities.

To follow Twitter updates from Creamer and two of his crewmates, ISS
Commander Jeff Williams and Soichi Noguchi, visit:

ie and silverlite have updates
java 6.18 is out

interesting

Monday, January 18th, 2010

hi.
software patch.com the main portal I use for patches is reviewed as security risk about free with a couple small issues, cookies, and a couple other things not sure how acurate this is.

http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/softwarepatch.com/summary/

its good to know that the site is free of risk and that its really popular and that sites they use for other things are good to.
there are no user opinions or reviews like user comments which I would really have liked to read.
myself the site has most of what I want, the owner is helpfull and I actually like that.
The site serves stuff up quite quickly.
there are a couple popups but thats just life.
Once there was spyware and also some broken links but as I said the owner was quite helpfull in doing something about it.
He is also aware the blind do use it to which means that the site should stay text for some time.
The only site portal semi usable is jfwlite.com although there are no updates to that site anymore after the origional owner died and its being maintained only.
Or rather kept online.
so eventually the links for all the new stuff will go out of date but all the old stuff will not.

google and skype

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

hi all
disgust is the lest strong of the words I wish to express about the new google phone.
Saying that it is a rather bucking falier is an understatement of the decade the first of such of this one at any rate.
Unaccessible touch screen, and not much else.
wall papers crashing the system and loads of other dissapointing factors
The list goes on, the iphone has its points that when it crashes it doesn’t totally do it and even then.
I am still of the old style symbian type, however this is just dissapointing.

In the case of skype tv its not as sucky as people may think.

Skype tv is actually quit possible.
From reading www.digitaldarragh.com
I have found that it is possible if you need to to mount an eee pc or other mini computer in the back of a tv meaning internet, tv, email other movies, etc could be watched from the confort of your own couch or loungesuite.
Its also good social
eticate for one thing.
I have been told to actually leave my system and do more things of late like swim in the pool and other wise go out of my room.
Although I chould run the system for a short time on the wireless on the go, as it were I’d still have to focus on it so hmph.
I can see skype tv and maybe direct interface with a computer with the tv as a good idea for the older generation.
My grandpa for example can not use a small laptop keyboard or read a small screen.
He has a new system but does not use it as he should.
If it was on his tv I could see him using it more especially since he does have the resources for it.
Having tv in general for most sighted means you can have access to hidef screens and sound systems.
Again grandpa has one and I think it would rock to play games with if only I could hook the system up to the tv.
Ofcause with an eee pc or other mini system the fact you can have it on the network and not see the system necessarily, would really jazz things up.
My system is a laptop so it can go anywhere.
However by itself I can’t do much with it.
If I need to have external devices then they need to exist making it fill up a desk.
I have hard drives, scanners, bulky headsets external keyboards and mice on here.
and whilst this makes it a nice feature they are all noticable.
To play anything without headphones on good quality I need to connect the system to a bulky pair of speakers and a sub under my desk or a bulky amp next to my desk which is about as high as my chest.
The tv soundsystem is set up with speakers in corners of the room, on top of the set and underneeth, the console of the system is quite flat and ancle hight.
There are also a lot of advantages when dealing with this sort of tech.
Its cheaper to replace things and has multipul benifits.
The only tech that comes close is a mac which could if it wished to run everything you wanted.
