RE: TruthOrFiction.com Virus Alert

A couple of virus warnings that are out there today:

The first one is capitalizing on the death of pop star Michael Jackson.

The email comes with a subject line about Michael Jackson such as
“Remembering Michael Jackson.”

It appears to come from an email address from “michaeljackson.com”

It includes an attachment titled “Michael spongs and pictures.zip” which
is described to include secret songs and pictures of Jackson.

Security experts warn, however, that if you click the attachment you are
exposed to a computer virus—-one that almost immediately starts
spreading the virus to other Internet users via email.

The second one is an email offering you a software update from Microsoft.

This one directs you to a link—-but don’t click it. It, too, will
expose you to infection.

As always—have good virus protection software and keep it up to date.

Hi all,
This may be very important for everyone. Usually I don’t post many of these from truth or fiction as most relate to topics not related to computers or technology in general, but this one is, and so be aware of this. The notice as I got it is below, take care of yourself.

RE: TruthOrFiction.com Virus Alert

A warning from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) about a new scam that is spreading via email.

This one will appear to have some authenticity, however, because it will pretend to have been sent from someone you know.

The email says that a friend of yours is stranded in a foreign country and needs quick cash. The email asks you to wire or transfer money to him or her and promises to repay you as soon as your friend returns home.

Some versions of the email will refer you to a link to learn more about the dilemma, but the BBB says don’t click the link. It will infect your computer with the same virus that was used to send the email from your
friend’s computer—and your friends will receive the same request for money except that it will appear to have come from you.

The warning says that the virus is hidden in a screen-saver and that many anti-virus programs will not find it.

According to the BBB, if your name and address end up being used to send the scam emails, that is regarded as identity theft and you are urged to go to www.ic3.gov to report it. That is the Internet Crime Complaint
Center operated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center.

RE: TruthOrFiction.com Virus Alert

There is a new email circulating that could result in your computer becoming infected with malware.

Be careful about an email that offers to show you the “CNN.com Daily Top 10″ stories.

It appears to be showing you a list of links to various videos of news stories but if you click any of the links, you will get a message that says that an incorrect version of
Flash Player is installed and will give you a window to click to download and install the correct version.

In fact, however, clicking the window will allow your computer to become infected with malware, probably making your computer part of a vast network of computers that
are used for spreading spam, malware, or harvesting personal or financial information.
