NCSAM extra! Social Media and staying safe on it

Hello folks,

Its after NCSAM, but I feel that this should be a post for NCSAM so I’m going to go ahead and put a blob on the blog about it.

It comes from komando.com and is titled 5 social media dos and don’ts to protect your privacy and security and you should check it out.

The 5 dos and don’ts are:

  • 1. Think before posting
  • 2. Don’t overshare
  • 3. Keep a low profile
  • 4. Don’t click on that ad
  • 5. Don’t take the bait

There is also a bonus tip, and that is drunk posting. Don’t post when drunk, says the article, you might get yourself fired.

1. Think before posting

Have you posted something, everyone read and regreted it? We’ve all done it, I’m sure. Look at what happens with celebrities and polititians who have to apologize for what they said years ago because they posted something and it was screen shot.

2. Don’t overshare

This community is really bad at checking in to everywhere they go. Yes, I looked at options like Yelp and only checked in to one place just to see how it worked, but after i was done playing, I quit. I saw one person check in everywhere, even at bus stops, rest stops and stations from around the country. Kim’s article has more on this item, not necessarily the checking in aspect but this is definitely a good one.

3. Keep a low profile

I hardly use social media anymore. Yes, I’m on social media, but at the same time, I know that if I don’t have it, it can be used by actors to tarnish my name. This section might also be applicable to this community too.

4. Don’t click on that ad

I don’t click on adds, but high partials might. That add for that suit you want might be malicious and ask for personal information off a site you’ve probably never heard of. I have sighted readers, so this one may be more important to them than our blind counterparts.

5. Don’t take the bait

People love arguing, and social media is the best place, says the article. Make sure that if it seems too heated, you back off. It could possibly lead to trouble you don’t want. According to the article, it leads to doxxing. This is a term I’ve heard of, but I do not know what
it means.
We’ll learn about this together, don’t you think?

Bonus

We covered the bonus above, and this is a new one for me, that I heard once on Kim’s show whether it was the 30 minute version or the full show. Drunk posting may become a new thing, and I hope it doesn’t.
