Why are teenagers turning to TikTok and other social media to get help about health concerns?

During today’s newsletter, there are two articles that caught my attention. Today’s first article from that newsletter is diving in to the aspect of teenagers using social media sites and services to diagnose potential health concerns.

I’m curious why anyone would want to turn to social media to get help with some issue?

When we were kids, there was no such thing as social media, let alone the Internet as we know it.

komando.com indicates that parents should listen to their kids in regards to what they’re thinking, feeling and going through.

The article is titled WebMD for Gen Z: Kids diagnosing mental health disorders online and I suggest it a read.

We may not be professionals, but we can sure get them to people who are more qualified than we are. While the videos they see may have some truth, says the article, it may not be the whole story.

TikTok has had their first bonehead award of the podcast this year, and several boneheads last year. Wouldn’t surprise me if all social media platforms get it this next week.

Stay in the know, stay safe.

  1. Shaun,

While you’re talking about linked in, that’s what it is supposed to be used for. But getting medical help baased on one minute videos is what the article was talking about.

We’ve talked about various issues with TikTok through TSB’s podcast series. Unfortunately, you’ve told me you don’t listen to that.

The thing you need to know is that they have had so-called challenges that can be quite deadly. I read the articles and we’ve talked about it. If it is so bad, and TikTok isn’t doing anything about it, it is the last place I want my people to be although I can’t stop them.

With that said, no social network is going to be 100 percent safe and we know this. But getting mental help by videos you see online may not be the best advice as well as some of the challenges you may have heard about that could cause more problems than you want to have.

  2. Jared I agree with you.
However younger people are exposed to the net.
    Its addicting as all hell.
Not many now can remember the time before the borg arrived.
I can dimly remember it but I’m not sure if given the chance if I’d go all the way back at least not perminantly.
    Though I am trying naturally.
    Kids ask online for advice.
Us first gens though know thats a potential risk.
Its like my friends with online dating.
    A lot do it.
I still think online dating is dangerous if not potentially then well its like you buying cheap clothes online and getting mangled sizes, etc.
Its never set well with me at all.

I think part of it is the trust in so called experts.
Now yeah there is a lot of good on that but there can be problems.
Now because of what it is many experts do have a cast online.

It gets their reputation out and increases business and is smart thing to do.
But there are a load of others out there and we haven’t mentioned the darknet even just the beach not the deep oceans just yet.
Sometimes its worth it sometimes its not.
Ticktock dispite all its issues is the next thing.
We may politically have issues with china but right now its the main market and from a buyer’s point of view or a user point of view on the serfice its just business really.
Its trendy to get helpped online.
    It can work though.
My brother needed a dentist because he had an issue and his one was away.
Being he is a businessman working in a business field, etc hhe used all his resources.
In this case he found one on the business social network, linked in all the reviews, all his qualifications etc were posted, and used this network to get the new dentist.
The dentist was good and while I have not switched or my dad, my mum has and bang you have business.

I have also a friend who’s parents are quite well off.
He found a girlfrend in corea she keeps asking for cash, she has a nice video and a nice face.
He doesn’t care what we tell him, bang a problem but thankfully not one I need to deal with constantly.
So yeah the network can be used for good and evil.
What we seem to try to do is label x evil and z good.
Good things can get hacked or can be evil and perceeved evil may not be but you don’t know.
There is no right or wrong way.
Some stuff used for example say my barber aint good for a lot of people but it works for me.
No one size fits everything or one either.
So what I say may not mean much to what you say back.
Its just the way of things.
In the end there are some things you just let fly.
