I guess Kim’s staff and I are on the same page. I know I want to leave Facebook, but people can just take my name and any available picture, and the same holds true according to the article I’ll link to talking about why you shouldn’t just delete twitter.
The article is titled This Twitter mistake could put you in danger and talks about how to delete all your tweets, deleting your profile picture, and preserving your twitter handle.
Once a twitter account gets deleted, you can get it because the handle goes back in to rotation for anyone to have. After that, they can put up whatever they want including calling their name you.
This could be the problem even if you have nothing to do with the social media platform because employers can search you out as part of their process and find things that have nothing to do with you.
What I would personally do is just stop using the thing. I wouldn’t worry about whether or not the tweets are deleted, I’d just post something to the effect of: “I’m leaving twitter, if you want to find me …” and post something about where they can find me.
Since I have a web site, I’d go ahead and post that. If you don’t, you could post where you’re going, like Mastadon, Facebook, Linked in or whatever you decide to do.
I’d at least read this article and give it a look before deleting your facebook or twitter accounts and make the right decision that is right for you.
