The top Zeus botmaster was taken down

Hello everyone, while I’m here blogging today, I remember that I had posted to the TSB list about the top Zeus bot creator that was taken down.

The article is titled Top Zeus Botnet Suspect “Tank” Arrested in Geneva and it was written by Krebs on Security.

If you don’t know who Brian Krebs is, you aught to meet his writing as he writes articles like this one.

He also wrote the book Spam Nation a great read if you want to find out what the early days of spam included.

While I want to link to this book on Email Host Security, I don’t think I can as the landscape has changed. Brian talks about what he does and how he got started too.

His former employer didn’t really like his writing, but I did. When you have articles like the one linked above, you have done your reporting well. People need to know about takedowns like the Zeus botnet and its developers because Zeus was one of the things we had to look out for. Why? Because Zeus was a banking piece of malware, it ook your credentials and allowed actors to log in to your bank or credit institution and do whatever actors wanted to do with it.

According to this article, the suspect named in the article was arrested in Switzerland. He apparently was born in Ukraine.

The bad thing is that this suspect was a well-known DJ, whose DJ name is linked within the article. Brian’s employer prior would edit his stories to take out information like that out, or even if they want, change the name altogether.

We’ve covered Brian’s writings before, even the one misstep that got him in to quite a bit of trouble. But writings like this one will give him a better mark, and over time, the one black mark will disappear.
