Counterfit activity has no season, Phishlab says

Back in the day, we’d use to get spam that claim we can get handbags, purses or whatever we wanted for cheap.

With the rise of top level domains, these schemes can be going at a new top high. According to the Phishlabs blog, they blog about this in an article they titled Holiday Season Triggers Rise in Counterfeit Activity and it should not be surprising to see.

As the holiday season continues, we need to be very vigilent on what we click on, or in this community on, double tap or press enter on. The first paragraph of this very informative article says:

Criminals are capitalizing on the urgency behind gift-giving celebrations such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and Hanukkah. Counterfeit activity has grown more than 50% from September through November, with a 27% increase over the course of November alone, according to Fortra’s PhishLabs. These threats are impersonating brands on social media and the open web to target consumers with misleading advertisements, look-alike domains, and illegitimate online storefronts.

This is one reason why I decided to buy every major domain I hought would be used for EMHS. I baught:

  • emailhostsecurity.com
  • emailhostsecurity.org
  • emailhostsecurity.us

I figured if they target me with emailhostsecurity.com and I sent an email and blogged about it, they would try to get at the others. In fact, during the first month of this project, around black Friday and Cyber Monday, we were getting calls from companies who I did confirm asking me if I wanted web development, SMO services or anything else.

SMO services for those who do not know what that means deals with Social Media Optimization.

I looked at the one webs site and it was pretty good but I didn’t find what the agent wanted me to find. Also, I found buttons that were not labeled.

With that said, if we get calls like this, we can get email with the uptick as discussed where they are trying to sell things that are not necessarily there or different than what they’re wanting.

Jessica and the team at Phishlabes, nor Fortress, do a great job on this article and I want people to read this one.

Thanks so much for reading, and make it a great day! Lots in this one.
