Here’s a twitter update frmom Friday about SMS authentication

On Friday, I saw tweets from Twitter support.

Twitter Support: Effective March 20, 2023, only Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text messages as their two-factor authentication method. Other accounts can use an authentication app or security key for 2FA. Learn more here:

The second tweet says:

Twitter Support: To be clear, two-factor authentication is still not required to log into Twitter, although we highly encourage users to enable it. This change just restricts the 2FA methods available for accounts not subscribed to Twitter Blue.

Here is the blog post talking about the change which will take affect March 20th.

If it is true that third party access is going away which at the time of writing has not happened yet, I may consider deleting all of twwitter that belongs to me or abandon it. I haven’t made up my mind completely but disabling SMS authentication is the wrong thing to do. I would leave those enrolled enrolled. SMS is better than nothing. I think this is a bad move.

That’s my opinion, and everyone can agree with me or disagree with me. I know my password for my main account may not be that secure, but others I maintain are.

I created the twitter account well before we had many two-factor options, in fact SMS was the only thing I could use and most people can use.

I guess time will tell on this one.
