There’s new protections that are coming for those who had money stolen from EBT cards

I’ve been contemplating how to write this up, as states don’t really have any way to reemburse patrons who have been affected with this ongoing problem.

According to the Krebs article, states have until the end of the month to figure it out. They’re still recommending that people change their pins once a month, but will that really help?

I’m not sure it will because you change your pin by calling a number or using an app. Some people, not all, may not be able to do that because they don’t have the number or don’t have the tools and technology to change their pin.

It should be up to the user to do the best they can, but the problem also lies in the state. The article indicates that states do not have any fraud protections within their network, and at least I heard that one person lost their benefits because the state basicly called them a liar.

If I were sleeping, and I had the ability to look at my transactions and saw that my money was withdrawn say at 6 am, I could prove that I was at home, by taking a picture of my transaction history. That has my location right there, and if they wanted more proof, I’d take a picture of my house to show them that I was there.

The state may not care still, but lots of people as I said don’t have the technology to change pins, and even if they did, some may not remember what the pin was they changed it too.

One question I have, how long are the pins that are set by these cards? If 4 digits, an actor has to just try them all until they have a match. It doesn’t take that long.

The article New Protections for Food Benefits Stolen by Skimmers is the article and I hope that this finds you well. Stay safe!
