Opinion piece, How to fix the TikTok problem. Let’s discuss

I spotted a boost from the author about this opinion piece that they wrote in regards to fixing the Tiktok problem.

I actually have been saying this for awhile. While Tiktok can do more than something like Facebook and Twitter, all of our social media platforms have problems.

I remember hearing and covering the rest of the stuff like the 2016 metalling that was done in regards to the presidency and I called for this to be fixed then in my podcast. I also understood it was a hard problem, and I couldn’t give any solutions as I don’t really understand what exactly was going on. I was reading stuff just like the average consumer would.

The problem is that everyone loves social media. I don’t. While I’m on it and I comment on things that interest me through this blog, I don’t post my life, watch every single video or get in heated debates about stupid crap that I can’t do anything about.

I’ve tried through the years to give people the bennefit of the doubt, but have learned thanks to Kim Komando that we can’t do that anymore.

This reporter really has a great opinion on why we really need to overhall social media. Facebook really needs help, Twitter is in disarray, but TikTok apparently deploys a keylogger.

TikTok shares more data than any other social network

The problem is, TikTok has more data than even Facebook and Twitter. Sure, these apps ask for your contacts, location and more, but a keystroke logger? Knowing what you type in conversation or replies to videos?

According to my blog post blog talking about interesting news at that time, we knew that TikTok has blatently violated what is known as the children’s online protection act while others have not done so as far as we are aware of.

If you’re still not convinced, here’s the blog post that talks about TikTok’s apparent other security problems. This was research done between it, Facebook’s messenger and other apps in regards to data and other usage.

But saying all of this, all of the social media platforms are going to have their problems. I agree with Julia and that we need to reign all of these companies in with the collection of data. Banning it might be a start, and it could put other companies at notice, but then again, maybe not. Reigning the companies in for collecting data because they can when it has no place for doing business is correct. Read this one, How to Fix the TikTok Problem. Maybe it can finally lead to change?

  1. Shaun,

Great opinion. While I have the social media, I’m like you. You have your name up there and that’s great. Trust me when I say that I’ve never posted something like the fact that I took two dumps today. Nobody needs to know that. But I do post about TSB, I post about my Internet Radio shows, I post what I’m going to read from around the landscape through services, and I’m not sitting on the device 24-7 either.

I do share the same as you, but maybe I do a little more.

I don’t know what the full solution is, but I do know that some people do spend way too much time on social media and post way too much.

  2. To be brootally honest, the real issue aint the sites or who owns them.
    The issue is us.
Lets face it us humans post to much online and with microblogging, and social networks while some of it is good, say for family, etc some of that can be well no good either.
My family from indonesia is on a multi generational group of people on whats app.
I will never join it but everyone else is on there for politeness.
We recieve a lot of news and a load of ticktock.
Most of it is not interesting but thats life.
On the other hand if someone is in trouble, died, etc the network knows almost immediately.
I do have facebook and twitter but I rarely post.
I have a wordpress and a live journal before that and I struggle to post 1 post a week or 2.
And with my various conditions as you well know that will most likely never ever go away, I don’t want to spend my waking life on social media even if I get a phone that can do that I will restrict my phone to phone activities only.
However I realise all the new gens not millennials like myself I think thats where my gen fits in anyway well us and those before never reguarded the net as an actual load your life onto because we started outside of the matrix.
And some of us still do.
My father barely understands the systems and my uncle is a technofobe that doesn’t understand any of the stuff and it really frustraits him.
We never grew up online so its not a problem.
I do think we need to stop posting every time we have a dump, and well want to track what everyone is doing in real time and useless stuff like that.
I mean everything has a purpose right?
Sadly we adopt things quickly and not all habbits are good.
For example due to ear blocking I am always really concious of my ear state and always try to clean them.
Its a rteall habbit and at some point damaging as I used to put water down my ears which I shouldn’t do, its a fobia I realise I have of making sure everything is just right but at least I am aware I have it.
I think if all of us stopped posting silly vids, status reports and generally used the net as it was originally meant for as a research and communication platform we wouldn’t have this issue.
Sadly its everything from backup to how we make war.
With russia being russia well 1 guy and so on and our issue with china the next world war or wars aint far off never mind issues all over the place, my country is not excluded from the drama and unstable nature of the world either.
Well once we get it out of our system, and sort our environment or our attempt to justify why we need to post every time we do a dump the next thing will appear.
Sadly I don’t think we are capible of realising that the net is not a toy and actually we need to scale right back and actually attempt to live with eachother and then actualy enjoy our plannet we are on.
