Andy Greenberg writes, Twitter’s encrypted direct messaging feature is half baked if baked at all

Matthew Green and others are praising Twitter for the first effort on encrypting direct messaging. In this lengthy article, Andy does a great job with explaining things, as well as having quotes from Matthew and others.

The wired piece is titled Twitter’s Encrypted DMs Are Deeply Inferior to Signal and WhatsApp and it should be read for some background.

The bad news, which I’m going to put right here, is that you both need to pay for Twitter blue or equivalent to even get the thing to begin with.

WhatsApp and signal give everyone that, although you need a phone number to get started, but it is e2ee and the help article is not saying its truly e2ee and they know its half baked.

Good job, Twitter! Keep breaking things.
