HHS announces settlement on ransomware case

I’ve been sitting on this article for awhile, and I believe we’ve talked about it. The databreaches article is titled HHS announces its first settlement in a ransomware case: Doctors’ Management Services and I think its a good start.

The problem is, we’ve had more breaches and ransomware cases than this, and I don’t know if this really helps matters.

The real problem is, doctors and hospitals are known to run out of date software not by choice but by necessity. This is because of the equipment that is needed.

Maybe small doctors offices could upgrade, as long as the billing software and other pieces of software they use are working, but this seems to be the norm. If we’re going to be getting anywhere, especially with cases like this one, than we must be harsher on mistakes.

Just like we get punished in different ways for our actions, we should punish the business in certain ways too.

Please read databreaches for a complete rundown and any links. I hope it isn’t the last. While its the first, it better not be the only one.
