What do you guys think? If Amazon sent you an email telling you that uyou’d need to pay for using the device, called Alexa Plus for now, would you pay?
According to the article I’ll be linking to, the AI that it is using now is halucinating, and this is discussed in detail when it comes to Chat GPT.
While its nice to hold conversation, the article indicates that its horrible on everything else.
I have used my device to play games, and even get the weather. But it isn’t something I should have to pay for.
I do get things from Amazon from time to time, but not enough to pay for its prime service.
I do like Audible, the books listed on EMHS may not be available through services like BARD (part of NLS) although some may be.
The launch date for this supposed paid service is the end of June, according to the article. But people who worked on the first one say that they don’t want to see the older version die.
Amazon Wants You to Start Paying for Alexa is the article if you wish to read it.
I have a hunch they’ll just kill it altogether at this rate.

It would have to be a good reason for me to pay for the service.
I use thhe basic services on my echo dot.
I do pay for a spotify subscription which I use on my echo but also the family uses on the stereo, no 2 stereos with the ability.
I do have an alexa chain on one of the stereos and a streamer box and the tv as well as the phone since that is the only to configure the thing now.
However with google removing all thhose commands from their system and since most of those were what attracted me to them, I wouldn’t bothher touching them as a result.
It would depend what the service offered.
But to be honest if I have to pay to use basic alexa, that 50 dollar echo dot is going into landfill and I won’t be recommending amazon either.
I lived without ai before and I can do it again if they want to be like that to put that politely.
I hardly use it now and I see no reason to bother changing if they the companies want me to pay for it.
My aunt has a dot and hardly uses it.
All I use mine for mainly is iheart and net radio because of the quality and to be honest gaming.
But because a lot of stuff like starfinder is us only and a lot of the games can’t have addons and stuff purchiced in new zealand the insentive is less.
Now if more stuff came here then maybe.
Also if I had more devices chained together that I’d use myself maybe also.
I grew up before the collective, before online accounts, before the borg, before a lot of the modern systems.
Its not like I can’t do without skynet.
I mean it would be nice if I could just take it or have insentive to become one with the new overlords but if they start charging then its a no brainer.
Anyway I wasn’t born into the matrix in fact I was born like you before fast net even existed, even dialup in my case.
People are only just now conciddering going mobile only and I still hold back.
Due to various health and other issues I have I am slowly pulling back from things I don’t need to handle, in fact I just pulled formally off flight simming and thats another step back.
My next pull will be bt sync maybe and then who knows.
I haven’t wanted to pull completely back but maybe in the next 30 or so years I may even pull back completely from the net.’
I was born offline and I have half an old mind to die offline to.
I know its not cheap but charging is just going to drop people.
I use twitter still because I like the interface.
I use google for what its worth because I still like it.
In fact if they charged for ai because I am so much into that system I’d probably pay for it because I use enough of it.
I don’t use amazon alexa enough to justify paying for service and that would be the kicker for me at least.
Heck I still use a keyboard.
