The BBC is being faked to redirect users to malicious stuff

Kim Komando covered this in today’s newsletter, but I saw this in the Malwarebytes newsletter that I received yesterday.

Apparently, news is going around about someone dying with a link to what you would think to be the BBC. According to the article, the author clicked through logged out of facebook and it did some redirecting to a TLD called .club.

I’ve seen this type of domain before, sadly. Seems like they’re up to no good with this domain TLD either, just like others I’ve seen including but not limited to .online, .top, .shop, .email, .xyz and possibly others I’m not thinking of at the moment.

The fact that the post tagged two people who may not know each other directly should be a sign. The account that posted the message could have been compromised, putting the person’s friends at risk for anything to go wrong.

To read the complete details of this next worst thing, read the Malware Bytes article “I’ll miss him so much” Facebook scam uses BBC branding to lure victims and do pass this on to Facebook. You never know who may thank you later.

Catch you later!
