The announcement comes apparently as a settlement reached with Meta, which sued Freenom a while back. This is a much more toned-down version of the original statement that Freenom published on Feb. 12, but soon redacted (see screenshot).

That statement was hugely self-contratulatory, and talked about mysterious “exciting possibilities” for the company ahead.

A New Horizon for Freenom: Collaborative Resolution and Strategic Shift
Amsterdam, 12th of February 2024. In a significant development, Freenom has today made a
groundbreaking announcement regarding the conclusion of the lawsuit initiated by Meta Platforms,
Inc. The resolution, achieved on confidential monetary and business terms, marks a pivotal moment
for both entities. Freenom expresses its recognition of Meta’s legitimate concerns in safeguarding its
intellectual property rights and the imperative to protect users from fraudulent activities and abuse.
This announcement is not just about the resolution of a legal dispute; it signifies Freenom’s
commitment to responsible business practices and ethical standards. By acknowledging the
importance of Meta’s efforts to combat fraud and abuse, Freenom aligns itself with the broader
industry’s goal of creating a safer and more secure online environment.
In a bold move reflecting its dedication to positive change, Freenom and its related companies have
independently decided to exit the domain name business, including the operation of registries. This
strategic pivot underscores Freenom’s commitment to focusing on its core strengths and exploring
new avenues for growth and innovation.
As Freenom transitions away from the domain name business, it pledges to uphold the highest
standards of integrity and cooperation. While Freenom winds down its domain name business,

Have fun.
