16 billion credentials leaked, not part of any new breach … part of infostealer data possibly?

Angry Cat

Trhying to get myself caught up on to more current news, and this is at the top of Bleeping Computer.

Written by Lawrence Abrams on June 19th, it clearly and distinctly breaks down something that another publication may have written saying that this 16 billion dump is part of a new breach.

I believe I may have seen something similar to this before this date when a headline jumped out at me but then said it wasn’t clear if it was a new breach.

While CyberNews is pretty reliable, they discovered this massive database, and as I write this, I am not accusing them of saying that this is a massive new breach.

What I will say is that this article has great tips on what you, the average user should do.

You should find a password manager that you trust. As shown, just because I like one manager or app, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Search password manager here and I’m sure you’ll find articles talking about some of them.

Having unique passwords is key, although with infostealers, its game over anyway because it steals everything that is within the browser.

This is another reason why we continue to recommend not! to use the browser to store those passwords, even though its convenient.

Edge being the latest to do password management similar to a password manager

No, the 16 billion credentials leak is not a new data breach is the article on this one.

One of the newest password managers reviewed by one of the JRN folk is Nord Password. Here is that blog post if you wish.

Listen to podcast 170 which talks specificly about password managers.

We also talked about podcast managers in podcast 36 of this program known as the security box as well.

Tech podcast 236 can be requested if you want it, and it also talks about password managers within its content.

Even LastPass has ideas on choosing the best one for you. While they’ve had their own issues, that’s the one I use, as they’re straight forward when there is an issue. This is the link to that blog post.

We cover passwords and management as part of NCSAM, and this is one such blog post.

While some of this material is older, it may be still relevent, and that’s what we’re about. Make sure you do your own research to see what works for you.

I’ve read a good portion of 16 billion passwords exposed in record-breaking data breach, opening access to Facebook, Google, Apple, and any other service imaginable and I can say that they’re making it clear that they don’t know where all the data is coming from, and Bob is well known in this industry anyway, I’ve heard his name elsewhere in other circles.

You should read this article too, as it is very comprehensive and does indicate that we can’t say that this is one piece of data. It was last updated today and it seems like it has continually been updated with new info as an investigating team should do either by adding to the current post or creating new ones.
