Character.ai bans teens, no clear policy

This article from Cybernews is quite interesting, as it discusses what the company is trying to do to make sure teens are able to use chatbots like it and maybe pave the way for others.

I can see where you can use the app in certain situations, and have a two hour limit but as the article states, it can be bypassed if you know what you’re doing and of course trying things.

The fact that character.ai is doing age verification now by teaming up with a company is a good start, we have to worry about this type of info being pilfered because this could be a gold mine for cybercriminals now that they know who character is using to do the verifications.

More than 70 percent of teens reported using AI companions

says the article.

Should COPPA really cover this? You shouldn’t be collecting anything from teenagers anyway, although COPPA covers the ages of 13-17 and in some countries its 14. I honestly think that we should start with the laws we already have, get companies to comply with them, and stop fucking around indicating that they aren’t doing shit, don’t give a fuck, or whatever else.

I understand that age verification can be bypassed, but we need to start somewhere. I don’t have a great solution except to see what the laws like COPPA offer to have sites verify what they’re trying to do, but we’ve not even gotten started with dealing with the issues.

If we have a hope, there is a heading within this article about a federal ban which could have some teeth, but we have no idea how it’ll play out.

Tech-savvy teenagers will find a way to bypass Character.ai’s ban, experts say is going to be your article for this one.
