Here we go again about one of the pet peaves of mine. According to the article we’re talking about on this blog post, we’re learning that actors are buying at least 1300 domains, over 1200 of which go after luxury items like watches and the like.
The JRN has been receiving emails saying I can buy these things and looking at the domain tells me that it is probably not a good idea.
I wouldn’t know where to buy luxury things, whether I have the money or not.
The research has been done by a research group at a company called BforeAI (B capitalized, AI capitalized) who I’ve never heard of.
If this is true, the research says that the majority of the domains were baught on or around the 11th of September. While some of the domains are active, says the researchers, some were flagged by them to be used in future campaigns while a bunch are sitting dormant.
As part of our 2023 NCSAM coverage, we covered domains.
Podcast 115 also talks about domains. There are others too including this years series.
The question goes back to what I’ve been barking about for years but can’t seem to find those posts at the moment. But why are the registrars not doing anything about the fact that all of these domains are being registered in such a short period? Especially if the actors probably know they’re going to be short lived, and you have to buy a domain for a minimum of 1 year.
In my opinion, that’s a big fucking waste of money if I’m buying a domain to park it just to use it in some campaign which will either be successful or fail and then either park it again or let it expire. Can someone explain this stupid shit to me?
The article also indicates that it could be possible that they’re registered to deal with the terriffs that have been put in pllace by our administration which may be agreed with or not, but I’ll stay neutral.
The article is titled Crooks target luxury brands with 1,330 fake domains was published today, so it is hot off the presses.
Have fun with this one!
