Hi all.
There were a few others last week but not many.
Today has the usual security and other updates for windows 10 and higher.
The major issues fixed seem to be misidentification of a dll for a component as bad as well as removal of several modem drivers and the like.
I doubt that anyone really uses modems anymore as it is at least not by choice.
A lot of copper lines in the western world are gone anyway in favour for fiber optic so the fact we lost modem support is a bit mute to be honest.
A tiny office update was released today for security.
However its worth noting that over the weekend there was an out of banned update of really large size I assume large as microsoft never reveals how big a download actually is on the check inside office so I never know but my gut says this was buildup from the end of the year’s update run.
A reminder to check your supported products windows 10 and office 2021 will end support this year.
So if you are a business user or need the extra security you need to update it.
Of course if you are a home user my advice would be to switch to thunderbird and not bother with outlook.
I don’t see any reason if you have standalone to update your office installations especially if you are a home user and don’t handle much office stuff.
If you need to do this I would probably get the 365 subscription like a few of us have.
As expected mozilla updated firefox to 147 with 148 already at beta1 on monday as did adobe acrobat.
Thunderbird when I wrote this was yet to update but both are now on 147.
Chromium stuff updated last week and chrome 144 released this afternoon so edge will update this friday or saturday as usual
Zoom updated also.
Vlc had a minor update as did audacity, innosetup, calibre ebook reader, goldwave, and balabolka for those using that system.
Dropbox 139 is out but 140 will probably superseed this sooner or later.
Judging by email we are still enjoying a semi hot summer.
There are some rain storms coming but lets hope not for long.
I am currently living in a building site which is meaning I have to do all the work at one end of the house before 8 in the morning.
Due to those storms the builder will be working to finnish a load of stuff today and will work in the weekend to stay on schedual.
That means I will need to find something else to do.
I was really hoping to while I don’t sleep in exactly but I was hoping to relax and take it really easy.
At least there isn’t anything due and nothing I need to bother with.
The biggest news on windows itself is again ai and how microsoft is implementing it.
Its been reported on varous sources that 1 million plus users are switching to 1 particular linux distribution but who knows if thats official or not.
One thing is for sure, even if microsoft tries to fix things people are leaving things.
And the sad thing is its microsoft’s reputation rather than what its doing now thats probably the thing.
As usual it think the way it does things is stick the whatever it is in our faces and its not helping.
Ai, sure I like the idea, in fact give it a bit and we will be ready for assimilation.
However not like this.
Firstly with the admition from microsoft about its agents and security and now having ai all over the place people are concerned.
I like ai in my brouser.
I like the idea of talking to my system.
Would I like ai to have access to my files and personal data?
In theory yes.
Yes I want ai to have control of my data and I want to be able to use it to help me.
But as it is, I need to be able to give it instructions.
As is usual microsoft assumes the user will accept a lot of stuff if they just give it to us on a plate without much choice.
That is probably why the cybermen got so much backlash in upgrading the humans.
Seriously we don’t want to be given it without a choice.
We want to ask questions and decide what we do with the tech.
Ok its a logical step if you are a robot and to be honest I don’t dispute that.
We are not stable as a race why not get the ultimate upgrade, I don’t see a problem in a purely logical sence.
But lets face it organic beings are not exactly on and off and we have survived for ages so what does that mean.
Of course if ai could have its own emotions and could possibly have an organic inteligence then maybe there wouldn’t be the issue.
I mean sure we would have to change but the universe does that millions of times a second so I don’t see a problem in that respect but just taking control and choice makes resistance.
I wouldn’t remove all ai from my system but I am concerned because of the reputation of the company putting the system together and so are a few others.
Saying that if I ask ai a question it mostly gets it right.
However ai is also used by the badguys and there are a lot of fake things out there.
My diagnosis is we are pushing to far and to fast.
We have barely time to calculate and its making things worse and messy.
Its easy to do stuff, but the wrong people are also getting things and wrecking the reputation even before we are able to get started.
In my opinion though the real test will be in the next century when most of the pre collective guys like myself have jumpped to the next dimention.
Eventually we may come back in our starships to see what happened.
As it currently stands, minus the 3rd world war and environmental stuff, if we can avoid pushing it so fast that it all falls over before we have finnished our lunch and tea then I think we will one day soon hbe happy to become the new cyborg species.
As it stands though the most likely outcome will be the colapse of the entire framework.
This will take a lot of the echonomy with it and so on.
With the dependence of people on the net its more than likely that with the loss of power all of us will die.
If it happens between now and the middle of this century like in the next 10-20 years there will be enough of the older race to adapt and retry but if not thats us done.
A lot of the machines see a lot of errors and mistakes and there are a lot of trust issues.
For myself it will be unlikely I will completely upgrade because I have almost no need to enter the real world.
Even if I do who knows.
Then again, if I was offered it, I’d probably take the upgrade.
My human life is ok, but I’m really not losing much if I have to trash it.
I haven’t much investment and certainly little I would concidder coming back bar my family.
I’d like to back my memmories up and my life so I can restore it later or add bits to the other but there hasn’t been much keeping me on this planet for the last 5 or so years of real note.
Family to a point of course but that goes with anyone.
Over that if I was given a choice to voyage and was given an insentive and could do it on my terms which aren’t that many and certainly nothing really cignifficant I’d just go.
I havn’t much to lose and probably a lot more to gain.
Then again power isn’t for me I want an adventure, a purpose, a voyage, a jump to the great beyond.
I am a trecky I guess so that does help.
Maybe I am more open to things.
With all this in mind I will end this thing before I woffle to much.
