editorial, windows 11 and why 10 is still holding out

Hi all.
You may have noticed my absence for a bit.
I have had a busy couple weeks but thats winding down a load now so check the wordpress blog at smeveriss.wordpress.com for a post I will put up later today well at least by the end of the weekend at any rate as I really need to put something up soon.
Windows 10 is still alive and kicking, and the supported pc market maybe a thing etc.
I have a few issues with the way things are.
Firstly microsoft admitted last week that they literally put an end on support so that people would buy 11 for windows 10.
So windows 10 support was made to end so they could run 11 as a selling point.
That means that the hype to get windows 11 was just hype.
At least initially.
Rumors are that the biggest reason people are not going to 11 is that its not a sinking ship.
As I said before, windows 10 may be 3 times at risk of getting security issues now but the point is, we didn’t have all the mess windows 11 has been having.
The latest is that I had to use an unofficial method microsoft revoked to stop an intel extention from downloading multiple times on the system.
There have been massive bugs on 11 that us on 10 have not had.
Ie our systems still boot when we turn our systems on.
I don’t care about security if security means I can’t start my computer.
Next ms accounts and encryption.
Now for the business user maybe thats a good thing but a home user is not aware till a bios update or osmething means they lose their security key.
They don’t get a choice.
For myself I wouldn’t incrypt my data at least not everything and tie it to my ms account.
Now they are increasing incryption to other drives that are not the system drive.
The fact is we never asked for this.
I don’t as a home user need an incrypted drive of any sort.
It means another thing I need to turn off or get rid of.
Luckilly I have a modified usb drive thanks to rufus but really this is a real turn off.
Next local account, yes you can jump through hoops to get it but if you like me never take your system with you and never expect to travel with the thing out of the country and anyway its 10 minutes to scan normally and becides with the crazyness out of the us people have to think why they go, the fact is I am unlikely to take my system where I need to secure the entire drive.
Now if I could incrypt certain folders and files with a password and decrypt at will, have a key and take that on a secured ring, etc then maybe I’d do this but on and off well.
No good if the system can’t run because it needs to decrypt to be bootable is it!
I have family members who did used to run the latest secured office etc who use other methods to get email, etc and to be honest only use office to view and write a few files for home use.
I am even conciddering switching them to opensource at this rate.
In fact for what they do and how they use their system I am actually thinking I may not update their system unless I can’t secure the brouser and a few basic apps and even then, its used for soliteer and other card games mainly, gmail and chrome brousing of the web and thats about it.
I have thought about updating to 11, because I use my system for well everything from system admin, to shopping, etc but again to be honest as long as I can get updates for firefox and chrome I actually have no need to update.
Now its revieled that ms is pushing prices up on 11 to oems which means, compounded with ai and the other dramas pushing ram prices up, computers are going to become really expensive.
I have found another system I am interested in but now am having second thoughts.
If windows 10 continues to have support till next year and maybe a year after that I may not bother updating at all.
The ai copilot key and other features haven’t really helpped users either and some have found them well not good to be honest.
Windows is no longer the big cash cow ms had it before to quote a news story I read today but enterprises are its main driver.
If I were microsoft and with the climate I’d have 2 versions of windows here.
1. windows for home users, based on 10.
Home users will not get any feature updates, maybe security but no feature updates.
They will not have the latest features.
They will not have ms accounts.
They won’t have ai.
They won’t have onedrive.
If you want they won’t have office 360 or other online microsoft services.
They won’t have copilot.
They won’t have edge.
They won’t have store.
They won’t have ms support if you really want it like that.
The software is free and can be installed onto any system for home use.
Home users can of course go pro if they want but if you go pro you will have to run for businesses like it is now.
I think if ms did this they would cut out 99.9% of its complaining users!
I use windows 10 with the store and yes while I find some apps usefull I’d be happy having used windows 9x through xp and then 7 to go back to the old home style of using a computer.
Even if I as a home user would never be able to access any ms services and so on as long as I could use desktop apps that would be fine.
Hardware requirements would be well on anything I wanted without any issue.
As a home user as I am that would be fine.
Maybe I am over simplifying things but that sure would fix a bunch of stuff.
Now you could add on all the stuff that I mentioned to be cut off they just wouldn’t have it available on install and thats fine to.
A couple days ago due to an unplaned outage we hadn’t any net or anything.
Luckilly most of our stuff is offline and stored locally and yes I could still login with the password to the ms enabled account on my dad’s computer.
However for those completely online, good luck!
I am happy I was able to turn on my windows 10 system without any login or password and access my home system.
Now to updates.
Patch day happened, everything from chromium, codecguide, java, dropbox, office and a bunch more are recieving or getting multiple updates not to mention adobe.
There will be a bunch more so thats that over.
A reminder I will be out at the end of the month for a week for another holiday.
