EBT cards, the disabled and threat actors

Now, actors are going after the most vulnerable, the disabled. I’ve been thinking about this article by Brian Krebs titled How Card Skimming Disproportionally Affects Those Most In Need.

While I don’t have an EBT card, I know that people need these cards to survive. They are provided by the government to allow people like you and I to be able to buy your every day essentials at your favorite stores.

The amount is loaded each month on your card by the government. Did you actually know how they’re actually ran? Not through your chip card, and not necessarily a swipe card either from what I understand.

I am not sure how many people in this community have these cards, but this article … is a must read.

A portion of the first paragraph states:

those receiving food assistance benefits via state-issued prepaid debit cards — are particularly exposed to losses from skimming scams, and usually have little recourse to do anything about it.

Little recourse because the government won’t reimburse you for those losses, even if you can prove that the loss wasn’t at all your fault and you didn’t even do it.

There’s plenty more, check out the article for more. We’ll be talking about this on a future podcast.
