Youtube-DL targeted in music takedown

Torrent Freak is reporting that Youtube-DL is a piece of software that can put youtube videos in to other formats.
A german court found that this software is violating copyright law by allowing people to freely copy music from Youtube.

While I’ve not used this software, and an agency recommends using it, there are other pieces of software.

The goal of this article is not to rat out any one software as I may have one and others may use another. The point is, if the music industry which includes Sony and others go after this one piece of software, you should go after others.

The Torrent Freak article is titled Music Labels Win Legal Battle Against Youtube-dl’s Hosting Provider. They were quick to celebrate the win but the hosting provider that hosts the site will be appealing this one.

Just because a site links to something you don’t like, have you used the software and understand how it works? Or did you ask the developer abot its potential uses? Probably not.

I saw this through Mastodon, and I have covered this type of thing in the long past, so this is definitely interesting. If the major record labels don’t want people to download music through youtube, maybe you aught to go after the service? Its a public URL on the internet just like the site you’re visiting and reading right now.

We’ll see if we get any other updates on this one.
