Earlier, we published about a potential breach that ook place at Western Digital.
Now, it seems like we know a little bit more abut what happened. According to the Tech Crunch article, names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card data may have been taken. The good news is that the data was salted, otherwise known as hashed.
This is great, because it will take work for the actors to get at that data, depending on the salted hash.
This article is titled Western Digital tells customers that hackers stole their data and should be given a read. Its unfortunate that it has come to this, as the email was not even accessible to screen reader users. I’m unclear if other assistive technology users were impacted by not knowing what the email entaled.
The company is giving 2 years of monitoring services and advises customers that they should be caucious of any links.
Please read this full article for complete details of what happened. Taking about a month is a lot faster than the many months it used to be. Seeing that the actors were within the network from near the end of March to mid April, this time delay seems sensible to me.
With the other issues going on at WD, this is going to get very interesting.
Push on!
