This 9 to 5 mac article puts it right out there. Apollo, one of the biggest applications to use Reddit will be shutting down as of June 30th.
We are posting this two days after the fact of reading it because we want to be in solidarity of the folks who use Reddit every day.
As stated in other articles and blogs, this will affect more than just this community I serve. As I wrote in my show notes, I suspect Reddit will get their “asshole of the podcast” for this and rightly so.
From the braille ready copy of the show notes under morons
On June 12-13, Reddit went dark to protest what is known as the Twitter API fiasco. We have multiple articles which are linked to in our show notes that cover Reddit’s idea of supposedly charging $0.24 per 1,000 API calls, yet app developers are saying they’ll need to pay $20 million. Also, they claim that the base price is $12,000 a month. So, what is it? Most of Reddit is not accessible without third party apps, but Reddit is doing what Twitter did. Recently, they backpeddled and said that accessible apps are excluded, but the JRN calls bull. Please let us know what you think.
I decided to stand in solidarity and not post a single item to the blog for the two days of the blackout so that people can see the various articles talking about this rediculous ordeal. At least they have a chance, where Twitter really didn’t give two fucks, as they have nobody to call over there.
The 9 to 5 mac article is titled Apollo shutting down due to Reddit’s unaffordable API.
I hope that this finds you well, and I hope that this news is of value. Thanks for reading!
