In an article I saw this morning, I thought that this was a great read and should be good business sense.
To be honest, I always hear that we’ll “put it on the list” and never hear anything when it comes to accessibility bugs and I know that there are plenty who have voiced this through Mastodon.
They have the right to say that.
This article is titled Accessibility Isn’t Just Nice; It’s Good Business should be read.
If people who develop understand this, maybe we’ll get somewhere with all these bugs that software has that companies just put the accessibility bugs on a list that probably gets forwarded and not delbt with.
When I read one boost about wining about accessibility, I just have to wonder.
Is it really necessarily for a 7th title to be developed to fix this issue?
As today is the signing of the ADA as done in 1990, how can we fix this?
Well accessibility has changed over the years.
It makes sence though that everyone who are your potential customers should have access where possible to whatever it is you are doing, its commen sence and with a lot of things being web based or having web based components there is almost no excuse.
Any customised anything though well there is a problem there, then again there is enough ai related image descripters out there that that shouldn’t be a problem.
And anything java or chrome based will have some accessibility so yeah the interfaces are there.
We don’t need plugins and extra overlays I mean most of this can be done server side and without the limitations put on us with pre fibre and other tech it should be reasonably easy to do.
There are standards to follow if you wish unless its really something you can’t do.
You shouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel either most of it is tthere.
Its good to have as much outreach as possible.
So just like the race issues in this country though there are the old guard.
All those plugin makers, software makers like visparo, dolphin and others that came online first.
Those that would lose a lot if they didn’t sue everyone to make things their way, etc.
With the web poised to take over it generally looks good.
Even some universal windows apps not accessible because they use web tech they are now accessible to use.
You may not need to rewrite anything as such.
Unless its graphics design or you need that exttra screen or even say its a game that well who knows.
You may have to do a little more work but as standards get more seemlessly streamed in it should get easier to become accessible.
And remember accessibility shouldn’t be a nice to have its a must.
It shouldn’t bust the bank and it shouldn’t be a problem.
Of course if you want to be accessible to jaws and other old guard software then maybe that could be a problem.
Who knows.
As a tester of dolphin I am perfectly aware that I and others had to push to get chromium based tech adopted when others had already updated for example.
A lot of the old companies have it sweet now and they don’t see any reason to change their tune just like about everyone else that is in the same boat.
Anyone new should start fresh and if you can shove it go with it.
I do understand the resistance for those that have already done, thats why for example all renpy vis novels 2016 and lower are not and never will be accessible.
If its done rewriting aint the easiest and costs more.
So yeah there are also those that just don’t.
Eventually though we should be in the situation where we are able to be where we need to be.
