For awhile now, experts have indicated that you should turn off bluetooth and wifi if you’re not using it. But here’s a boost with a legitimate concern.
Steve Mann: Boosting Lynn I (lynnskyi): Just read an article suggesting you turn off bluetooth and WiFi when you’re not using them, and that you do so, not from the control center of your iOS devices, but from settings. The second part of this makes total sense to me. However, if I turned off both bluetooth and Wifi every time I wasn’t using them, I’d be doing so many times throughout the day.
The reasons given for this were to conserve battery power, and to prevent hackers from gaining access. Good reasons, of course, but I have my phone set so that it doesn’t automatically connect to wireless networks, other than mine. As for bluetooth, I suppose I could turn that off when I’m not at home, but depending on where I’m going and what I’m doing, I sometimes bring along the Orbit Writer, so I can more easily type on the touch screen if needed.
Perhaps i’m missing something vital here, but it seems to me to be quite inconvenient to turn both off every time I’m not using them.
I also have a writer, two bluetooth keyboards, and of course the air pods version 2. My lock also works on bluetooth, so it needs to know where I am so it can unlock when i approach my door when I come home.
Here’s what I would say. I would say that while great advice, most people probably won’t because of the numerous devices they use with their phone. But if I were you, I’d not necessarily worry about it unless you’re flying or get a bunch of requests to connect that you don’t recognize.
I too, don’t connect automaticly to other networks than my own, and don’t use public wifi of stores like Starbucks anymore like I used to.
If I had a power outage, I’d definitely be sure to turn these options off because Wifi wouldn’t be working and I normally don’t use my air pods 2 while home although sometimes I tend to depending on what’s happening.
I’m posting this publicly to see what others think. Let’s discuss. Am I wrong? How do you do this if you follow that type of advice? Its not wrong advice, but I think its sound and should be based on your use.

Hmmm I don’t know about this.
I agree but when do you not use these features.
Just about everything is bluetooth or wireless accessible.
Here is another thought for you.
Turn off your system when not using it for long periods.
I know many leaving things online but for me I power on, check diaries, update, do what I need to do, then shut down.
Make bed, train, power on, check mail, power off.
Yes it may impose extra wear and tear on the system, I know that.
But it also gives me control, windows will not sync or do anything stupid without me knowing.
I don’t get anything stupid going off, etc.
Used to leave system on all day in my earlier life but after some failures I don’t bother.
Then again, my life as a tester and tech means I don’t need to leave the system on all day.
I don’t have to colaberate with people, I don’t have to share.
I don’t have to access my cloud drive all day.
My work is done by 10 am and I only power on to watch old movies, play games, etc.
I don’t have my system on all night because I sleep.
I don’t bluetooth because I have no need.
I don’t even keep my amazon speaker on all day because I don’t need it.
I don’t leave streams up all day because I don’t want to.
I am old fashoned I expect but what the fuck.
Its not like this world has had a need for me to step into its shoes and being I am probably the last of my race with my condition I don’t have any ties to it either so it works both ways.
The only exception is probably after a huge update or dotnet load where I really want it to compile its libraries after its done so I can have a quiet pc.
I really don’t see any real advantage for myself to continue like I have.
Now I have done my morning session I may login later in the afternoon for my afternoon session but 20 minutes later I log off.
When I login it will be primarily entertainment based.
I am sitting on the main wired server doing updates and such now.
Oh and becides that leaving things on can screw things, we just had a sync update yesterday because networks were updated.
I have had situations where things screw because of this and when accounts screw its a ham basket to get it working without issues.
On one of my lists, a user has just had a hickup with his net.
No syncing, no decrypting of his bitlocked drive, no recovering.
Another reformat and backup restore later due to mangled net connections.
Not sure of his situation but a ms account, not me, and certainly I wouldn’t have had my system on during outage unless its that unreliable.
Still the fact is, maybe we should be carefull what we leave connected all day long.
I would stop short of turning feature x off.
I for example use wireless because the connection in my laptop is in a weird place and I am not close to the router.
Just about every other system bar the wired server workstation is a tablet or phone in here.
Certainly in some cases we do lock it down, but maybe flight mode when you are not in use is better, who knows.
