Sans News bites for January 5, 2024

Hello folks,

I’m going to try and keep up here with Sans News Bites, and its a brand new year.

One of th biggest stories and i’ll be covering it separately is the item on Lastpass. I can’t blame the commenters that Lastpass is a little late with some of this, but hey, its a brand new year and while it was a bad one last year, if this helps matters, let’s see how it can be.

Under top of the news, we’ve got our usual three items.

  • Orange España Mobile Outage
  • Hospital Fined Over Web Tracker
  • New LastPass Master Password Requirements

While I’m here, a hospital fined for using tracking cookies that are well known is probably good, but now if that is going to be the case, let’s go after the rest of the companies that track people.

While this blog has a possibility of tracking because we allow you to like and post to Twitter and Facebook, that’s all we’ve got. But that’s on you to use and you don’t need to use it to enjoy the content here. A cookie is used when you log in, but I don’t sit through logs, trying to peace together all of my visitors. If you contact me, I use the info you give me to contact you then discard it unless I’m allowed to keep it.

Here’s what else is around the web for this week’s newsletter.

  • HealthEC Data Breach Affects Millions of Patients
  • Victoria (Australia) Court System Cyber Incident Compromised Recorded Court Proceedings
  • Personal Data Taken in Estes Express Lines Ransomware Attack
  • Defunct Ambulance Service Data Breached
  • First KEV Additions of 2024
  • “Top 5” 2024 Cybersec Compliance Deadlines
  • Chrome Stable Channel Update
  • SANS Holiday Hack Challenge

Several of these make me want to shake my head. Especially the 4.5 million on one, and the court not really giving clear answers on mitigation and other remedies they took after their incident.
