This Ars Technica article talks about someone who developed what we take for granted to keep our computers time synced. That protocol is called NTP or Network Time Protocol.
He also had a hand in the protocol we use for uploading to servers called FTP and he also did some other work.
According to the article, he went blind due to glacoma.
