No April fools joke, AT&T is coming clean with 73 million customers and non-customers breached

We’ve been watching this story unfold within the past while. We recent blogged about the fact the company still didn’t know where the data came from after three years. This is that blog post and its titled AT&T still can’t say where 73 million records are theirs, and Have I been Pwned says 49m alledged if you wish to read it.

On Sunday, one of my contacts sent me a post from Twitter indicating that 73 million customers and former customers were breached and AT&T confirms data for 73 million customers leaked on hacker forum is the article found through Bleeping Computer.

Since this data has been going around for three or more years, and put out through the dark web numerous times, it can’t be stated that the company coming clean is “about time.”

I don’t exactly know what else to say, but this is one of those that should’ve been cleaned up years ago.

What the hell was AT&T waiting for? I don’t understand it. I would not take 3 years to tell you that data came from my system(s) that’s for sure.

While the breach has been moved to 7th on the latest top 10, Have I been Pwned still shows it over 49 million and not 73.

We talked about this in passing during news notes under the last podcast. Here is that blog post.

This … is beyond repair.

I wish I could say Happy April Fools, but I can’t.
