No formal charges … 15 year old suspected of exfiltrating data

A 15-year-old teen is suspected to have stolen data from the Frenc government, according to 15-year-old detained over French govt agency data breach found on Bleeping computer.

The fine could be as much as 300,000 euros and jailtime can be iup to 7 years.

The governmental agency indicates that it was 11.7 million records taken, while the number potentially out on the sale market could be between 12 and 18 million.

Looking at Have I Been Pwned, this entry is not listed there, but that may not necessarily mean anything as not all breaches are tracked, especially with as many as we’ve seen these days.

I’m a little concerned about the short sentence, although this could be the first offence for the teen, and maybe this could be his deterrent.

I guess we’ll see what happens. Also, because the teen is a minor, he has been sent to judicial supervision until former charges are filed.

On April 20, ANTS disclosed that a threat actor breached its systems and accessed data from individual and professional accounts on the ants.gouv.fr portal. The government agency determined that among the affected data types were full names, email addresses, dates of birth, postal addresses, and phone numbers.

I don’t know about you guys, but this could start the process of social engenieering, to get the rest of the data for ruining anyone’s life they wanted from the 12-19 million pieces of data now out there.

Since no formal chyarges have been filed, we really don’t know what is going to happen. Read the full article for complete details.
