Here’s more on the canvas hack coming from CNN

Hello folks,

Earlier, I blogged about Canvas but also said that we had another story, possibly on Blackboard.

Unfortunately, when looking at the article, it is about Canvas, and while this is good news for Blackboard users, this CNN article really goes in to detail on what they know about the breach.

What I really find concerning about this article is the paragraph that states in part “… we don’t know much about the Shiny Hunters group …” while there has been plenty of coverage through the years in the tech press. While I don’t blame a mainstream press agency like CNN for not knowing much, I’m going to put the search results for Shiny Hunters right here so if they find this, it may help them see what the group has done through the years.

Different people from different schools, named, unnamed, commented on how stressful this is.

While I don’t know about Blackboard’s practices and what they collect, one of The JRN’s customers, Herbie Allen, mentioned that he is a bit concerned.

He indicates that Blackboard has his university email, and he doesn’t use it much outside of university, and that’s good. But if Blackboard is like Canvas, which I don’t know, they may be collecting names, addresses, phone numbers and email at least. But I do not know, and Herbie hasn’t said much.

The article takes quite a bit to read, and it does have some of the information that is already covered through our other post, so I’m not going to break it down.

What we know about the Canvas hack that has impacted thousands of schools is going to be your article coming to us from CNN.

Thanks, Herbie, for letting us see this coverage. We appreciate you as a customer, and making sure we get info in a timely manner.
