Dozens in the UK arrested … delbt with romance fraud

I think the news desk this week may have some good news segments, and I always love these.

This time, CyberNews is coming around and talking about how a bunch of people have been arrested when it came to Romance schemes.

The first paragraph is interesting, cause not only did they mention the UK, but a different country altogether. That paragraph says:

UK police have arrested dozens of suspected scammers and romance fraudsters belonging to organised criminal networks operating in the UK and Nigeria.

This is interesting, because Nigeria, if I remember correctly has been the place where the 419 scam came from, also known as the Nigeria 419 scam.

The way you get hooked in is as follows:

The Hook: You receive a letter, email, or message from someone claiming to be a wealthy foreign official, a displaced royal, or a business associate.

This comes from an initial Google Search. There are also many other names include Advanced Fee scams.

Wikipedia

While I don’t know the initial origins of the 419 scam, or what is now known as the advanced fee scam, it has been going around for many many years. Probably longer than the Gen Z folk, those who have been born in the last 20 years I believe.

The article continues:

The operation was led by the City of London Police as part of a wider investigation involving financial crime specialists from the Cyber Defence Alliance (CDA), coordination with the National Crime Agency, and cooperation with the Nigerian Police Force’s cybercrime team, according to the BBC.

For example, in one raid, police detained a man who was suspected of selling personal banking details online and facilitating fraud through money laundering. Authorities also seized two Rolex watches and £3,000 in cash from his home in the Midlands.

I don’t want to take apart the entire article, as it is short. But these are some of the paragraphs.

The entire article can be read by reading CyberNews and their coverage. Its titled Dozens arrested in UK romance fraud and money laundering crackdown if you wish to do so.
