We’ve got an update on the raccoon developer

Recently, I posted to the TSB list about the raccoon malware, and an update that includes that it steals banking credentials as well as possibly more.

As I think of what else I want to blog for news, this is one that should as it talks about the developer of the malware.

The article is titled Accused ‘Raccoon’ Malware Developer Fled Ukraine After Russian Invasion and was quite interesting.

One paragraph says:

According to those sources, U.S. authorities zeroed in on an operational security mistake that the Raccoon developer made early on in his posts to the crime forums, connecting a Gmail account for a cybercrime forum identity used by the Raccoon developer (“Photix”) to an Apple iCloud account belonging to Sokolovsky. For example, the indictment includes a photo that investigators subpoenaed from Sokolovsky’s iCloud account that shows him posing with several stacks of bundled cash.

While I have cash around here if it was ever needed, I would never go around carying these bundles It would be a prime target for anyone to cary large amounts of cash, no matter if it was as small as a thousand, or even more.

I do hope this guy can be caught and hopefully convicted of developing this malware, maybe it would send a message to other developers if this came true. I doubt it though.
