Kiwibank counting customers … major breach at Latitude lending company

Kiwibank is now counting customers after their lending partner Latitude suffered a major breach.

Our other admin, Shaun Everiss sent this to the network overnight. It comes from stuff.co.nz and is titled Kiwibank counting customers whose ID data was stolen in massive Latitude privacy breach which should be read if you live in Australia or New Zealand.

Both countries may be affected big time with this breach.

In one case discussed in the article, one person says that everything to commit identity theft was taken including face ID for verification purposes.

One paragraph says:

Kiwibank had thought it had just over 2000 customers whose identification details had been stolen in the massive cyberattack on lender Latitude Financial. But now the bank fears the total could be much higher.

Data stolen includes copies of licences, licence numbers and passport numbers.

To add to this,

The victims include current and former Latitude customers stretching back more than 10 years, as well as applicants for its consumer credit services that include Harvey Norman’s interest-free loans.

This goes back multiple years, the article says at least 10. It also includes former customers and that can’t be good for the company.

I do give Latitude credit though, they are writing customers who are affected by this and they are paying to get things replaced if necessary.

New Zealander Patrick Lee got one of those emails which told him the extent of the personal identification information Latitude had lost.

It had lost images of his driver’s licence, including his photograph, name, address, date of birth, licence number, version number, and expiry date. It had also lost the personal information he supplied during his application, which included his full name, address, and date of birth, and phone number. Also stolen was a photograph of his face provided as part of Latitude’s identity verification process.

That was everything necessary for someone to pose as him and take out loans in his name, Lee said.

Banks and lenders need to be more protective of that data. If you lost that customer, why are you keeping them in your system? The damage could’ve been a lot worse, sure, but it could have been better if you didn’t keep people who are not customers anymore. I understand its a partnership, but this is probably going to get worse over time as people learn about this breach.

For the full story, please check out the article if you’re in these areas of the world. You should be worried, if not concerned. Thanks Shaun for sending this.
