Happy Valentines day, folks!

Hello folks, welcome to the security box. This is program 179. This time, we’ll venture off the path a bit and talk a little bit about romance scams. Instead of using the article as a guide, we’ll talk about it in more general terms. Did you know that Valentines Day is one of the biggest times for this type of scam? Besides that, we’ll have news, notes and the landscape as we always do. Thanks for listening and make it a great day!

News, notes, the landscape

There is a lot going on, but we won’t be linking to everything. This is some of what we’ve blogged recently that could possibly be discussed.

  1. Our corrections desk must come out and make a correction. So … the tooth brush story seems to be a hoax was found after last weeks taping and confirmed what I had thought. Seems like other agencies have not updated their stories from what we can tell, but that’s not on me, read this for updates.
  2. Bank of America has been targeted. While I’ve not yet been notified, Bank of america warning databreach should be read. Someone replied: “My morning is complete. Thank you!”
  3. I always love good news. Malware sites taken down in bust which talks about the .ws TLD being in Samoa. Another TLD I would probably never buy.
  4. I published this one on the 12th, and Cybercrime Magazine published a podcast on it on the 13th. Romania is in trouble with a ransomware attack that could affect as many as 18 hospitals, but I saw a number as high as 20. 18 hospitals in Romania hit by ransomware attack should be read for this one.

  5. Volt Typhoon operated in networks for years was sent in by Michael in Tennessee. I also saw this in the Cybercrime podcast, and other sources. 5 years without being undetected? They need to listen to Security Now.
  6. <

  7. Job seekers! data thieves target millions of job seekers is an article that you need to read that is attached to this blog post. Be aware and be safe.
  8. We talked about this, but it is now in a different language. I thought it was blogged, but apparently not. This has some context of the original story and then gives an update. Fatal Car accident scam gets a push, now in more languages is the blog post.
  9. TSB doesn’t want to lose any of our subscribers. Take note of this, and be safe. https://technology.jaredrimer.net/2024/02/12/lots-of-things-being-recalled/ is the blog and it leads to a Kim Komando article. Be aware. Be safe.
  10. 63k employees may be the next target at Verizon. Inadvertent leak at Verizon may expose 63k of its employees is our blog post.
  11. More money to shut down Hive, forever is a good thing, whether its 10 or 15 million. I hope we have a hand in this, even if not directly.

Things to ponder

Here are things to ponder. If there are any links, they’ll be attached.

In passing

Alan Solomon was part of the Antivirus industry for many years. here’s the blog post that mentions it as I saw it on Mastodon. No article, but we don’t want things to pass by that might be of value. I didn’t know him, but it was because of him that Antivirus was born in part.

Our topic: romance scams

With Valentines coming, romance scams are going to be on the rise. With Valentines Day coming, its time for the romance scams in full force is a blog post leading to the article we’ll use for this discussion although we won’t use it like we normally do. We’ll use it as a starting point.
