The Security box, podcast 239 for last Wednesday, the 21st: Interlock

I’ve been so far behind these days, and with another project I decided to start that will benefit the community I serve, I will not forget to eventually post the show notes for the just completed program that we reaired

Lately, I’ve been releasing these show notes days after they appeared on the RSS and that should not be the case.

Here are the show notes, and we’ll be in touch next time!

Hello gang, welcome to the security box, podcast 239. Our topic today is dealing with Interlock. This is something you don’t want. News, notes, and the landscape as well. News, notes and the landscape as well.

Trivia

Podcast 238 asked the following:

How many seconds does it take to crack a 6-character password? Is it

A. 15 seconds
B: 30 seconds
C: 45 seconds
D: less than a second
E: 1 minute

The answer:

D: Less than 1 second: That’s all it takes for hackers to crack a six-character password, even if you’re using a mix of upper- and lowercase letters and numbers.

The answer also talks about using a password manager which is a link. Use one that’s working for you. You’ll be thankful later.

This week, its a little more open ended. The answer is not necessarily going to be here, but when you hear or see it, you’ll probably agree with the way we did it. Because of this, we could accept multiple answers as correct based on what the answer actually is. (888) 405-7524 or use the info given throughout the podcast.

Crypto hackers get crafty: A hacker group called FreeDrain has built an entire phishing empire targeting desperate crypto users. They do it by poisoning search results with over how many malicious links? Victims are lured by fake wallet support pages, asked for their seed phrases and drained faster than a Solana transaction. The heist? Already in the millions.

Is the answer:

A: 100,000
B: 250,000
C: 650,000
D: over 650,000
E: under 100,000

A Youtube video on a quarterly breach report

We’re going to start with the audio from a video DevaOnBreaches boosted. This channel covers breaches of the week, but since I’m two weeks behind, he boosted this one that deals with quarterly breaches.

For those who just want to watch the video, here is the link to do so. This comes from someone named Nick Espinosa and he’s on Mastodon.

I’ve just subscribed to the channel and it sounded pretty good.

Coinbase

We blogged the news that some sensitive info may have been pilfered and I say some because some of it is masked. I’ll probably be blogging the CyberScoop article, but I’m linking to this for the show. Both articles are similar one may have more info than the other.

M&S says you don’t have to do anything

Even though we’re learning that M&S got info stolen, they claim you don’t need to do anything. Here is the blog post about this one.

The NSO group

The NSO group is not really liked it seems. They got talked about this past week as they lost to Facebook and Facebook is now to get a bunch of money. Blog Post on this if it interests you.

These may be some of the news, what says you on the news?

Our Topic: Interlock

Interlock is a new piece of malware. Apparently, it will threaten legal action among other things if payment is not made. Interlock becoming more dangerous, threatens legal problems if you don’t pay is the article from the blog which leads to the article itself. It staarts as a supposed click fix that might say it can fix things, but as we’ve learned that they aren’t. This is more than that.

Have fun learning about this one! We posted it near the end of April.
